Safeguarding in Sport: Taking Responsibility – Taking Action

Monday 13 November 2017 at the Principality Stadium, Cardiff

10.30am-5.00pm

The National Independent Safeguarding Board and the Welsh Government will host a conference to launch Safeguarding Week 2017. “Safeguarding In Sport: Taking Responsibility – Taking Action” will take place in the Principality Stadium on Monday 13 November 2017.

The day presents a fresh perspective on safeguarding. With a blend of talks, thinking time and networking opportunities, the conference provides valuable insights into people’s experience of being harmed as well as their capacity to do good. Huw Irranca Davies AM, the Minister for Children and Social Care, will open the conference.

With the assistance of Sport Wales, the conference  will confirm how important safeguarding is to all organisations which are promoting sport and physical activities and recreation for all of us. It will underline the essential role of being safeguarding-aware in preventing abuse which can affect people in secret for their entire lives.

Former elite swimmer Karen Leach will describe her experience of being abused by her coach. The Internet Watch foundation will talk about their safeguarding work with Everton football club and delegates will hear about Sport Wales and the Welsh Safeguarding in Sport Partnership.

Joe Powell, the National Director of All Wales People First, will talk about his own experience of the care system and the harms which can result from being inattentive to what people with learning disabilities say and do. The Jacob Abraham Foundation will draw attention to the impact of drugs on young people’s mental health and how, from unimaginable tragedy, parents can architect something inspiring.  .

Chair of the National Independent Safeguarding Board Dr. Margaret Flynn said “Sport benefits individual’s and communities’ health and well-being. We can learn so much from the experiences and resilience of the speakers whose lives have been damaged but who have triumphed in strength and dignity”
